Equine Facilitated Sand Play

What is Sand Play?

Sand Play Therapy is a powerful and creative method for accessing the subconscious and unconscious, and working at a deeper level beyond the conscious and rational thoughts.

Based on the work of Carl Jung, Dora Kalff and Margaret Lowenfeld, as well as thousands of clinicians who have adapted the technique to suit the needs of their client populations, “Sand Play” involves creating a scene in a tray of sand with a collection of objects selected by the participant, to create a story which examines – in a safe way that is removed from the real-world situation – their wounds, the effects and the possibilities for resolution

What is Equine Facilitated Sand Play?

In 2017, on one of her many trips to Costa Rica, Gretchen Morgan of Lighthouse Counselling & Sand Play Training Center LLC co-created Equine Facilitated Sand Play Therapy in 2017 with Sally Nilsson and Debbie Draves Legg.  This technique combines Equine Facilitated Learning with Sand Play Therapy in order to offer a profound (and some say “life-changing”) level of healing.  The horses are active collaborators in the Sand Play process, not only supporting with their presence but often even selecting pieces and interacting with the trays.  Participants have found these horse interactions to be incredibly meaningful and enlightening, picking up on things that the person was either avoiding or not yet aware of, but which were important to be processed.
